More About Burberry!

Burberry Sunglasses are manufactured by Burberry Ltd., the company headquarters is located 29-53 Chatham Place in Hackney London, in the United Kingdom. Burberry is a division of Great Universal Stores plc. It was founded in 1856 and employs more then 2500 people and had sales in 2001 of more than 350 million dollars. Burberry creates luxury fashion items and it's brand has been recognized for both quality and style for more than 180 years. Burberry is doing it right!

Thomas Burberry is the founder of Burberry. He was born in 1835, and was apprenticed as a draper,(wholesale of cloth used for clothing). He began selling under his own name in 1891, more than thirty years after starting his first shop in 1856, so it is obvious that he had an excellent background in the clothing industry when he branded his company.

Thomas Burberry focused on outdoor clothing. He introduced gabardine into his outerwear. Gabardine is a durable, water resistant fabric which is comfortable in the worst weather conditions. Burberry began using the Equestrian Knight Logo and gained market exposure by outfitting Roald Amundsen for his expedition to the South Pole and Ernest Shackleton who led a team that crossed Antartica. George Mallory, a mountain climber, even wore a Burberry Gabardine jacket on his ill fated attempt to climb Mount Everest in 1924. Burberry also supplied the British Army with the Trench Coat during World War I, which became popular with civilians following the war. Burberry later added the famous Burberry check, it's trademarked plaid pattern, as a liner. Even early aviators wore Burberry coats. Burberry has a fantastic resume.

The company was taken over by Great Universal Stores and went public in July of 2002.

Burberry has recently used advertising in the top fashion magazines to increase its sales. It's ads have been in GQ,Vogue and Harper's Bazarr. Emma Watson who gained fame in the Harry Potter movies became the companies public representative. Models Kate Moss and Agyness Deyn, have also been featured. Besides it's main market in Britain, the company established a large market presense in both Japan and Spain. The goal of the company is to globally compete with Gucci, Prada and other top fashion houses.

In 2005, Burberry signed an agreement with Luxottica of Italy. This global partnership permitted Burberry to begin world wide distribution of sunglasses under the Burberry name and added a significant fashion accessory to the Burberry Brand. Although the company is steeped in tradition, quality and history, it's sunglasses are distinctly modern in both technology and style. Burberry Sunglasses are definitely a quality product like all of the companies other items.

Thomas Burberry died in 1926 at the age of 90, he would have been proud to see that his company continued the values he established as its founder!
