Know Your Lenses and Protect Your Eyes!
Sunglasses are a popular choice of accessories for people all over the world. With the abundance of modern day knowledge, sunglasses lenses technology has drastically increased over the past couple of years. There are several different types of lenses that benefit you in different ways so if you’re looking to see which would be the right fit for you then keep reading!
How to Select the Right Lenses
There are 4 main categories that you should consider when selecting your sunglasses:
1. Light Transmission
The amount of light that comes through the lens and reaches the eye is defined light transmission. You will want to make sure that you choose sunglasses with a light transmission of no more than 20%. You need to decide what exactly you will be using these sunglasses for. As an example, if you need them for driving you will not want them to be too dark otherwise you will not be able to see the road properly.
2. Optical Quality
This part is simple; you will want a pair of sunglasses that provides you with the best seeing capabilities. Meaning, you will want a pair that has less distortion and allows you to see clearly.
3. UV Transmission
When you are doing activities outside in the sunlight you will obviously want sunglasses that block the highest percentage of UV light. Typical sunglasses should block at least 95% of UV rays.
4. The Perfect Lenses
Ensure that your lenses reduce glare, are comfortable to see through, provide enough light and do not give you a headache. If your sunglasses involve all of the above then you have just found yourself the perfect pair of sunglasses.
Different Types of Lenses
There are several sunglass lenses that are available to you:
1. Polarized Lenses
Polarized light is when light hits a flat surface like water, snow, or pavement. When this light hits your eyes it can temporarily “blind” you or inhibit your vision. With the help of polarized lenses, you will be able to hide your eyes from polarized light.
2. Photochromic/Photochromatic Lenses
These lenses are particularly handy because they change from light to dark depending on which light you’re in. For example, if you’re in a bright situation the lenses will darken and if it is overcast outside, the lenses will lighten themselves.
3. Polycarbonate
These lenses are mostly known as “scratch-resistant”. Polycarbonate is the same material that airplanes windshields are made out of and they are shatter-resistant and absolutely crack proof. It is lighter than glass but has 50 times more impact resistance.
Sunglasses are the best and only way to protect your eyes from harmful light such as UV rays or even polarized light. It is hard to shield your eyes from such dangers without the use of sunglasses. Just as we need to wear protective goggles while working with power tools or science equipment, it is necessary that we protect our eyes by wearing sunglasses. You can get several different types of lenses put into your sunglasses to give you the best protection for your needs. Don’t risk it, save your eyes from potential damage before it’s too late!
