Schools out! Carpools are over! Its time to hit the beach and enjoy the summer with the kids… and you know how fast summer goes by…….so you need to make every minute count…you got the kids new bathing suits, cool beach towels, and plenty of sand toys. You thought you were all set but then you overheard some of your friends recently talking about protecting their kids eyes from the uv rays this summer.They were talking about the new sunglasses they just bought for their kids. You’re thinking they were the little plastic ones like you always bought your kids at the local drugstore each year …the kind the kids want to buy just as you are at the checkout. But then you realize they are talking about real sunglasses…..the real deal for their kids too. You’re hearing names such as ray-ban and Coolibar! They’re talking about the harmful UV rays and the eye damage it can cause to kids too. You always protected them with sunblock for their skin….never thought too much about the eyes……Hmmm…will check this out with the doctor.

Okay….fast forward a little…..had your check up with the doctor and was also able to ask him your concerns about the kids eyes. Were your friends over exaggerating about this? Are they just being overly cautious and a little overprotective…the way all of us moms do from time to time?

Well the answer to this completely shocked me. Since kids spend so much time outdoors it is very important that they also protect their eyes and block the ultraviolet rays of the sun. They should be wearing sunglasses that block 100% of the sun’s UV rays at all times. According to the latest research on this it is believed that our eyes get approximately 80% of their lifetime exposure before the age of 18. And UV rays are linked to eye damage such as cataracts and retina problems.UV rays aren’t the only danger of the sun to our kids either. Studies are recently showing that long-term exposure to HEV (high-energy visible light rays) may cause eye damage also over time and lead to Macular Degeneration in later years. Because the lenses in children’s eyes are less able to filter out the high-energy rays of the sun, they are much more susceptible to the UV and HEV rays .

So the bottom line is your friends were right ! Sunglasses are a complete necessity for our kids eyes. Always check the labels and make sure that they are rated to protect 100% from both the UVA and the UVB rays. No more buying those little plastic ones at the drugstore. And also make sure that the lens are impact-resistant and scratch-proof. Avoid glass lenses ..plastic is safer. Remember who’s going to be wearing these!!!!

Well there are so many glasses and so many styles for your kids to choose from. Your child will probably even enjoy picking them out with you…..well maybe…..as long as they have the final say! And they will love choosing the colors for the frames and even the lenses. Make sure that the sunglasses fit snugly. After all this work in choosing the perfect pair for your child you don’t want them to fall off and get lost at the playground.

And you can find a good pair of sunglasses to fit any budget you may have. You can buy very expensive sunglasses or you can buy very modestly priced sunglasses. The eye protection has nothing at all to do with the price. So rest assured the kids sunglasses are in your budget and they won’t make you go for broke. Unless they want to pack those cool and trendy sunglasses in a suitcase and go on a little vacation this summer to visit “Mickey”!!!!!!!!

And then you go to that little boutique on the way home and get that hat you have been always admiring in the window.You never needed it before but now its summer and its perfect! And now theres just one more thing you’ll be needing….a great pair of sunglasses.So you make that last stop before going home and check out the different styles…and there are plenty of them too. Time to decide on which kind to buy.

The first and most important thing you need to look for when buying your sunglasses is to makes sure that they protect you from 100% of both UVA and UVB light. You need to wear sunglasses to prevent damage from the ultraviolet rays in order to protect your eyes. If you wear contact lenses you are getting some UV protection but since they don’t cover your entire eye you still need a pair of sunglasses for that complete protection. You can also buy what they call a wraparound sunglasses and these protect any UV rays from entering around the frame.Polarized lenses and anti-reflective coatings also cut down the glare of the reflected light. These are typically great for anyone who spends a lot of time either on the water or a great amount of time on the road since it reduces the glare. Mirror coatings also are highly reflective coatings applied to the the front surface of the lenses to reduce the amount of light entering the eye. And lenses also come in various colors but this is strictly a personal choice. It doesn’t affect how well the sunglasses lenses will protect your eyes from the UV rays. Remember the most important thing in choosing your sunglasses is that they protect you 100% from both the UVA and the UVB rays.

Just as we all have a different shape and size to our faces so do sunglasses. You need to buy a pair that compliments you and your unique features. Our faces are typically defined as square, oblong, triangular, rounded or oval. And there are sunglasses that will work best with each one. Below are just a few examples of this.

Square face…. round styles work well….they will add length to your face too.

Oblong face……over sized sunglasses work well….kind of like that movie star look!

Triangular face….use a wider lower edge and no straight lines across the top.

Rounded face…..should choose sunglasses with few curves…rectangular sunglasses will work well.

Oval face….should chose sunglasses that cover the face from the eyebrows the the cheekbones…oval face is the easiest to fit because the face is symmetrical.

Sports Sunglasses…..If you are playing sports you need to choose a sport pair of sunglasses with nylon frames which would be the safest.Both the frames and lenses are made of special materials that won’t shatter if you are struck. So you get the double advantage of the sunglasses and also a protective eye wear. For the sports you!

Fashion Sunglasses….these are the most popular and you can choose from many different styles .Many of us are even making a fashion statement with our sunglasses these days and are buying the trendier designer sunglasses. But this depends on your budget . You can also find non-brands that make quite a statement too. You will be cool and sexy in either!
